There are different forms of kidney stones. The one most often found is calcium oxalate crystals (80% of those affected) and uric acid crystals (5-10% of those affected).
These all have something in common. They are the result of an alkaline environment and a lack of adequate fluid and electrolyte balance (read: you don't drink enough water). While you will come across a number of websites and videos of people who say that the acid alkaline thing is bunk, the fact is, it can affect our health.

It should be noted that there is a rare kind of kidney stone called 'calcium phosphate stones' that are produced in an alkaline environment and a lack of fluid intake. Again, they are rare.

Some foods and combinations of foods can promote kidney stone formation.
Sodas with phosphoric acid increase the risk of kidney stone formation.
Ice cream and tea consumed in the same meal can promote kidney stone formation.
Other factors that increase the risk of kidney stone formation include city tap water, processed foods, processed meat, pasteurized dairy, table salt, and foods loaded with sugar.
Symptoms can include pain in the sides of your abdomen. It happens just below the rib cage and above the waist, usually radiating to the back. It is most often only felt on one side. For some, it may also be felt in the lower abdomen, groin and genital area.
Because the sharp edges can cut the urethra, there may be blood in the urine.
Additional symptoms include pain when needing to pee, feeling the need to pee frequently, nausea and vomiting.

It is amazing how so many things that are new to us were common knowledge in the past. One basic practice of the Water Cures protocol is to drink at least 30-45 minutes before and 2 1/2 hours after a meal. This is not a new thought however. Notice what a magazine from 1925 had to say...
"Drink plenty of water two hours after each meal; drink none just before eating; and a small quantity if any at meal time. Do not take a bath until two hours after eating a meal, nor closer than one hour before eating. Drink a full glass of water both before and after the bath." (Golden Age, Sept. 9, 1925, pp. 784-785)
