You will hear numerous reasons as to what causes headaches. At WaterCures.org, we have a different view as to the causes of headaches. Sometimes looking at headache symptoms it is possible to identify the the reason we experience headaches.
The one answers to what is the cause of headaches you will not see in the medical books, chronic unintentional dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
When we have stress or when we are experiencing a fluid volume and electrolyte deficit, our body releases histamine. Histamine triggers the release of vasopressin. Vasopressin is a hormone from the pituitary that promotes the retention of water by the kidneys and will increase blood pressure.
It increases blood pressure by constricting blood vessels.
Blood vessels are one of the places where we could possibly feel the pain of a head ache. This is how the body takes care of the parts that need the extra water. The vasopressin, when it hits receptors, among other things, causes water to be pushed back into certain cells.
Rather than trying to end headache pain, one of the symptoms of headache, it is better to treat the cause. This can be done by taking unprocessed sea salt and dissolving it in the mouth. Then, once dissolved and absorbed into the blood, drinking room temperature water, which will be slightly cool.
The salt causes the water to be absorbed into the cells and the pain is relieved.
The renin-angiotensin system (RA) also comes into play. It also tightens the blood vessels and is a huge factor in high blood pressure. With a water shortages, our kidneys activate their own RA system so that more water is made available for urine production.
The RA system now starts conserving salt intake and salt retention. The body then will work to make sure it is properly hydrated or the hydration is provided for the most important organs.
The brain has its own RA system. Kind of like its own private wet bar. When there is a drought in the body, the brain cells trigger a neurotransmitter histamine which activate the brains RA system.
Science recognizes the RA system and the resulting fluid retention and and increased blood pressure as a pathological process. Science has not recognized it as an adaptive response to protect the vital organs.
Ironically, science is trying to treat headaches by manipulating those same chemicals inside our bodies.
Yet the simplest manipulation is drinking more water and dissolving a pinch of salt in the mouth. It takes water and salt to turn off the salt retaining mechanism.
Dehydration can be caused by not drinking enough water, a lack of salt, intake of alcohol, overeating or overheating of the body.
What about studies that found that using magnesium supplements worked for some?
Interestingly, unprocessed sea salt has trace amounts of magnesium. When combined with the other various minerals, it has a powerful benefit beyond just hydration. Only taking the salt does not have the unpleasant side effects experienced by those who have difficulty absorbing magnesium (diarrhea).
While science is trying to mask the headache symptoms, asking what causes headaches and addressing that underlying cause will for most people, eliminate headache pain.

It is amazing how so many things that are new to us were common knowledge in the past. One basic practice of the Water Cures protocol is to drink at least 30-45 minutes before and 2 1/2 hours after a meal. This is not a new thought however. Notice what a magazine from 1925 had to say...
"Drink plenty of water two hours after each meal; drink none just before eating; and a small quantity if any at meal time. Do not take a bath until two hours after eating a meal, nor closer than one hour before eating. Drink a full glass of water both before and after the bath." (Golden Age, Sept. 9, 1925, pp. 784-785)

As this site was first being built, I had a headache and as usual took an Ibuprofen. Impatient for it to start working, I decided to try the Water Cures. I took a pinch of salt and a glass of water. Then I took a second pinch of salt and another glass of water. My headache was gone in less than 5 minutes.
From my personal experience, it usually takes 30 to 45 minutes for Ibuprofen to work. Some have found it takes ibuprofen 24 minutes to start working.
